The light from the opening door awoke him from his slumber as she crept into the room. The jingling of her bracelets comforted him, and made him smile as she tried, unsuccessfully, to keep them quiet. He heard her hit something with her foot, and heard what sounded like a smothered giggle as she slipped in beside him under the blanket. He feigned sleep as she arranged her pillows and found a comfortable spot. She had a routine when she came to bed, she would face him on her side until she was ready to drift off, then she would flip over on her other side and go to sleep. He longed to reach out and hold her, but she hated to be touched as she went to sleep. It bothered him sometimes, but it was just one of her quirks, and he was used to it. He glanced at the clock, the only source of light in the darkness. "It's only 2 am.." he thought to himself. "She must be tired.."
He rolled to face her, keeping his breathing steady, so she would not know he was awake. He started at her in the darkness, he could just make out her face, eyes closed, relaxing into slumber. He thought he heard her whisper something, but it must have been her sighing. He loved her more than she would ever know, and sometimes he wished she did not come to bed so late. He hated sleeping alone, but late at night, after the baby was asleep, was the only time she got to herself, so he tried not to let it bother him to much....
***************************
She crept into the room, trying to close the door as quickly as possible. She didn't want the light from the kitchen to wake him up. She moved around the end of the bed, trying to make her tinkling jewelry be quiet, and she tripped over a towel she forgot on the floor and clapped her hand over her mouth to keep from laughing at her clumsiness. She eased into the bed, careful not to pull the covers off of him. She glanced at the clock on the shelf..."2 am" she thought, "and I am wiped out!" She finally got her pillows arranged and rolled over to face him, as she did every night, before she flipped over to go to sleep. She wanted to put her hand on him, to ground herself a bit, but her hand was ice cold and she knew it would wake him. She whispered an " I love you.." instead, and after a few minutes she rolled over and went to sleep.
*****************************
He watched her roll over, and after a few minutes he heard her breathing even out, and she started snoring lightly. He laid there for a while, listening to the fan, and the sound of her breathing. " I really should go back to sleep, I have to get up in a couple of hours," he thought to himself. After a few minutes he decided to take a chance, and he carefully draped his arm over her side, and as she relaxed against him in her sleep, he closed his eyes, smiled, and drifted off once more.....
*****************************
She woke as he arm slipped across her body, and she started to move it, he knew she hated to be touched when she slept. She decided she liked the weight over her and his fiery warmth against her skin, so she relaxed against him, sighed contentedly, and slipped back into slumber, a smile on her face......
